USSSA vs USA vs BBCOR bats: which does my kid need?
The stamp on the barrel decides where a bat is legal. Three stamps cover almost every youth and high school baseball bat: USA Baseball, USSSA and BBCOR. Which one your player needs depends on the league, and sometimes the age.
The short answer
- Rec leagues (Little League up to Junior League, Cal Ripken, PONY up to 14U, Diamond Youth): a bat with the USA Baseball mark. USSSA bats aren't allowed in them.
- USSSA travel ball through 13U: a USSSA bat, though USA Baseball and BBCOR bats are accepted too; at 13U, nothing lighter than a -8. At 14U: BBCOR or wood, USSSA's national rule (a -5 only in states that opted in).
- High school, college and the older divisions (Little League Senior, Babe Ruth 16-18, PONY Colt and Palomino, Dixie Boys Pre-Majors and Majors): a BBCOR bat.

From each league's current rules (each league page names its sources and the date checked). Drop and length limits still apply: at 13U USSSA, nothing lighter than a -8. Little League Tee Ball takes Tee Ball bats or youth USA Baseball bats. Wood bats aren't shown. Confirm with your league before you buy.
One bat for rec and travel ball?
It depends on the age, because USSSA's drop limits change at 13U and 14U (USSSA by-laws 7.01.C and 7.01.D):
- Through 12U: a bat with the USA Baseball mark works in both. USSSA accepts the USA Baseball mark, while Little League prohibits BPF 1.15 (USSSA) bats in Majors and below, Intermediate and Junior League (Little League), so a USSSA bat bought for travel ball can't be used there.
- 13U: a USA Baseball bat works in both only if it's a -8 or heavier. Many youth USA Baseball bats are -10 or -11, which USSSA doesn't allow at 13U.
- 14U: a BBCOR bat. It's USSSA's standard at 14U, and Little League allows BBCOR bats in Intermediate (50/70) and Junior League and requires them in Senior League.
Barrel size
USA Baseball bats have historically had a barrel of 2 5/8 in or less (USA Baseball), and BBCOR bats can't be wider than 2 5/8 in. Most USSSA bats in our catalog are 2 3/4 in; a few -5 models are 2 5/8 in. Every league on this site outside USSSA whose barrel rule we've read caps the barrel at 2 5/8 in (AABC's older divisions at 2.61 in): Little League in every division (Little League), and PONY prohibits 2 3/4 in barrels outright (PONY Rule 8-C). Dixie Boys goes further and requires exactly 2 5/8 in.
What changes next
From July 2027, new BBCOR bats can carry a USA BBCOR mark, and from 2028 high schools also allow a new class of lighter bats marked USA Baseball -4, -5 or -6. Today's BBCOR bats stay legal in high school. See high school bat rules 2028: will my BBCOR bat still be legal?.
