Parents ask
Will today's BBCOR bats still be legal after 2027?
Yes. High schools will keep accepting previously certified BBCOR .50 bats "indefinitely". (USA Baseball)
Can a freshman use a lighter bat than a -3?
Not yet: today every non-wood bat must be a -3 BBCOR. From January 1, 2028, high schools add a new class of bats marked USA Baseball -4, -5 or -6. Whether today's youth USA Baseball bats count isn't settled, so don't count on one. (NFHS, USA Baseball)
Do I need a USA BBCOR bat?
No. BBCOR .50 bats stay legal in high school. USA BBCOR bats reach stores from July 1, 2027 and are eligible in high school from the 2028 season, so check with your school before using one in 2027. (USA Baseball)

2026 and 2027 seasons

|---|---|
| Drop limit | -3 |
| Barrel, largest | 2 5/8 in |
| Length, longest | 36 in |
The bat rule as North Carolina's state high school association publishes it (2023-24 handbook), with the 36 in limit from USA Baseball's BBCOR standard. Wood bats have their own rule, which we're still confirming. State associations can add rules.

From the 2028 season
Still being confirmed. From 2028, NFHS adds bats with a USA Baseball -4, -5 or -6 mark. NFHS calls them a new class of bat with its own contrasting-color mark, while USA Baseball says USABat bats with those drops will be allowed. Until that is settled, don't count on a youth USA Baseball bat bought today being legal in high school in 2028. Today's BBCOR bats stay legal.
