High school bat rules 2028: will my BBCOR bat still be legal?

Today's BBCOR bats stay legal in high school. What changes is the name of the standard, a new mark from July 2027, and, from 2028, a lighter class of bat.

Now: the 2026 and 2027 seasons

High school bats are BBCOR .50: a -3 drop, a barrel no wider than 2 5/8 in and no longer than 36 in (USA Baseball; NFHS rule 1-3-2, as quoted by Baseball Rules Academy). See the high school bat rules for the details and the bats that fit.

July 2027: USA BBCOR

USA Baseball now manages the BBCOR standard with the NCAA and brands it USA BBCOR, a new category of its USABat program. USA BBCOR bats reach stores from July 1, 2027 (USA Baseball). The limits stay the same: -3, 2 5/8 in, 36 in.

January 1, 2028: lighter bats allowed

From January 1, 2028, NFHS allows bats marked USA BBCOR or BBCOR .50, and adds a new class of bats with a permanent certification mark in a contrasting color reading "USA Baseball -4", "USA Baseball -5" or "USA Baseball -6" (NFHS rule 1-3-2d). USA Baseball and NFHS announced the change together in July 2026 (MLB.com).

Do today's BBCOR bats stay legal?

Yes, in high school: previously certified BBCOR .50 bats are permitted "indefinitely" (USA Baseball; MLB.com). College is different: BBCOR .50 bats are allowed through the 2028 season, and from January 1, 2029 only USA BBCOR bats are approved (USA Baseball). See the college bat rules.

Will a youth USA Baseball -5 bat be legal in high school in 2028?

Not settled yet. NFHS describes the -4, -5 and -6 bats as a new class with their own contrasting-color mark (NFHS). USA Baseball's FAQ says high schools "will allow USABat approved bats with a -4, -5, or -6 drop weight" (USA Baseball). Until the two line up, don't buy a youth USA Baseball -5 today counting on it for high school in 2028. We'll update this page when it's settled.

If you're buying a bat now

• For high school in 2027: a BBCOR .50 bat. It stays legal in high school after 2027 too.
• For a player starting high school in 2028: a BBCOR bat works throughout. The lighter -4 to -6 bats will carry their own new mark; wait for the mark before counting on one.
• For a senior heading to college: BBCOR .50 bats are approved in college through 2028, then only USA BBCOR.

Little League says USA Baseball taking over BBCOR doesn't affect its 2026 tournaments or 2027 seasons for Intermediate, Junior and Senior (Little League).
