Checked Oct 27, 2026. Confirm with your league before you buy: local leagues and tournaments can set their own rules, stricter or looser than the national ones. The rule in full and its sources.

Typical bat size for ages 8 to 13

Bat makers' charts put most players aged 8 to 13 at 26–32 in (Louisville Slugger, DeMarini, Rawlings) and suggest a -11, -10, -8 or -5 drop (Louisville Slugger, DeMarini). That's a guide, not a rule: height, weight and strength matter more, so see what size bat your kid needs. Your league's limits above always come first.

Bats allowed	USABat (USA Baseball mark); wood
Drop limit	None
Barrel, largest	2 5/8 in
Length, longest	Not stated in the rules we read

All non-wood bats must have the USA Baseball certification and stamp
A bat found dented or damaged is taken out of play and the team is warned
After a warning, using one makes the batter out (Rule 221(h))

AABC ages are the player's age on April 30, and the cutoffs move a year each season: for 2026, Roberto Clemente is born on or after May 1, 2017 and Nolan Ryan on or after May 1, 2012, so a 13U player who turns 14 in the summer is still Nolan Ryan age. Roberto Clemente 7s and Rod Carew aren't covered: AABC's bat rule doesn't name them, and Rod Carew rules are set by each region. This covers AABC's Roberto Clemente (8U), Jackie Robinson 9s (9U), Willie Mays (10U), Gil Hodges (11U), Pee Wee Reese (12U) and Nolan Ryan (13U) divisions, which share one bat rule in the 2026 AABC handbook (tournament play). BBCOR and USSSA bats count only if they also carry the USA Baseball mark, which most don't. A local league can set its own rules, stricter or looser, so check with yours.
